What skills do I need to work in care?

To be a good carer, we look for people who possess a strong sense of empathy, are naturally compassionate, and have a genuine concern for the physical and emotional wellbeing of others. If you feel a pull towards the care industry, it’s likely that this is an innate part of you. In addition to being respectful and sensitive to the needs of others, you will also be committed to building trust and forming meaningful relationships with those you care for. Lastly, you must have no shortage of patience and be willing to go above and beyond to provide the high-quality standard of care we believe everyone deserves.

While working in care is less about having specific qualifications or work experience and more about having the right attitudes and values, we’ll make sure you have the tools and resources you need to succeed. To support your career development, we provide ongoing and specialist training, including attaining the Care Certificate which may include completing an NVQ in Health and Social Care.

What’s it like working in care?

Working in care is not your typical 9-5 job. Because no 2 days are alike, you’ll need to be flexible, good at thinking on your feet, and adapt to changing demands. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities so you’ll need to have your problem-solving hat handy. While working in care can sometimes be a demanding job which requires plenty of patience and energy, you’ll certainly never be bored!

What are the benefits of working in care?

Working in care offers plenty of benefits. To start with, you get to pursue your passion of helping others and making a difference. Plus, with plenty of opportunities to learn and grow, working as a carer is a great place to begin your journey into the world of social care.

You will also get the chance to meet new people – not just the people you care for, but also like-minded people such as health care professionals and a larger team of carers. In addition, working in care offers plenty of flexibility. Since carers generally work flexible hours, you’ll be able to plan your work schedule to fit in with your family commitments, lifestyle, or study demands.

Most importantly, working in care is a rewarding experience because at the end of each shift, you get to go home knowing that you contributed to someone’s happiness and made a positive difference in their life.
