What’s the difference between palliative and end-of-life care?

Everyone deserves to receive high-quality and compassionate care in the place of their choice, whether that is a hospital, hospice, care home or in the comfort of their own home. This includes people approaching the end of life or living with a life-limiting disease.

In this blog post, we discuss the difference between palliative and end-of-life care. We also provide more information on specialist care in Romford, Clacton on Sea, and surrounding areas and how we can support your family.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is designed to support people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting or incurable disease such as dementia or cancer. It is provided to people during their final days, weeks, months or even years of life. Support can be provided at any point during a person’s illness, in combination with other treatments or therapies. Our palliative care services are centred around providing emotional, physical and spiritual support to help a person manage any pain and distress. Our goal is to help you live as comfortably as possible during the time you have left, cherishing precious moments with family and friends.

What is end-of-life care?

End-of-life care is treatment, support and care provided to people who are approaching the end of life. Unlike palliative care, which can be provided at any point after a terminal diagnosis, end-of-life care is provided in the final weeks or days of a life. It helps people live as well as possible and then die with dignity. Support is focused on helping a person manage the physical symptoms of their condition and cope with any emotional distress. Emotional support is also provided to their family and friends after death.

Support from our sensitive carers

We believe that every individual has the right to receive end-of-life care and palliative care wherever they wish, according to their needs and desires. Our sensitive carers are here to support you and your family throughout the whole process. Not only can we help with daily aspects of care such as helping with medication and preparing meals, we are also here to provide emotional support. As you cope with overwhelming emotions, stress or grief, we are here to lend a listening ear. We can also help your family plan for the future or provide support after death.
